Why is my
computer so SLOW? |
|
Is your computer creeping along these days? There are
many reasons this may be. Here are some:
- Your computer is over 4 years old.
- You are running Windows Vista.
- Increasing memory (RAM) needs have exceeded your
installed memory.
- Spyware or adware has found its way onto your
computer.
So what can be done? There is hope!
- If your computer is over 4 years old, you might
consider replacing it. New machines have
dual-core processor and 1GB RAM minimum. A
well-built new machine will be several times faster
than a 4+ year old unit! Give me a call or
email and I'll send over a quote!
- If you recently bought a computer and it's
running Vista, you may just have to deal with it.
Vista is a resource hog and just doesn't run
particularly fast. It is possible to
"downgrade" (though some may consider it an upgrade)
to XP. This does take some time, but I would
be happy to do it for you. Also, be sure to
have 2GB physical memory installed to run Vista as
well as possible.
- If you think you are low on memory, check it.
Right-click on my computer and choose properties.
This will show your installed RAM amount (typically
256MB, 512MB or 1GB). Now right-click the
task-bar (along the bottom of your screen) and
choose task manager. Notice at the bottom the
number "commit charge". The first number
followed by MB is the amount of memory currently in
use. If your used memory is greater than your
installed memory, your system will slow down.
Memory is inexpensive and can breath new life into
an aging computer. Give me a call or email and
and bring some over!
- If you think you have spyware, you'll no doubt
know it because you'll get one or many pop-up ads
trying to sell you something, coming out of nowhere.
You can attempt to remove spyware yourself with one
of the tools listed on the
free software page, or you can have me do it
remotely or come out and take care of it. In
most cases I can remove viruses and spyware without
damaging the remaining system.
